Who Are We?

Holiday Happenings was launched in Canberra during 1997, with the helping hand of local government and the Minister for Education and Family Services.


Our priority was to assist in helping as many kids as possible stay engaged and active in fun and healthy activities during their time away from school.


Our combined goal was to provide families of school aged children with a free, comprehensive and easy to read information directory on the many activities available for children during school holiday periods.

24 years on Holiday Happenings is truly a one stop shop for school holiday activities in Canberra, with over 100 businesses advertising their programs, events and activities to ACT families and readers.

How Will We Achieve This?

Step 1 - ATTRACT

We are offering FREE advertising to businesses who would like to expose their school holiday activities to families within the areas of Newcastle, Lake Macquarie, Maitland, Cessnock and Port Stephens.

All participating businesses will be given a FREE listing on our app for at least the first 6 months (two school holiday periods).

Business Referral Bonus: If a business refers another business to join our free launch, they will receive an additional 6 months of free advertising. Bringing the total to 12 free months.


Step 2 - LAUNCH

When 60 holiday providers have joined, we will then launch the app in the Greater Newcastle region.


In order to promote the app content and build a user base among families within the community, we will undertake a brand awareness campaign through the use of:

- local radio advertising

- paid targeted social media advertising

- flyer distribution to local gathering places

This will take place in the lead up to each school holiday period.



Our first goal is to attract at least 1,500 downloads from users in the Hunter region.

If 1,500 downloads is not reached, businesses will continue to receive its advertising 100% FREE OF CHARGE until the 1,500 downloads target is met

 Frequently Asked Questions

When Will My Listing Go Live?

All listings will go live on the app five weeks prior to the start of the school holidays. This will give your activity plenty of exposure in the lead up to the holiday period.

How Long Will My Listing Remain Active?

Listings will remain active on the app for 10 weeks* :

- 5 weeks leading up to the school holiday period
- 2 weeks during the actual school holiday period (All 6 weeks for Christmas Holidays)
- 3 weeks after the school holiday period

* 14 weeks for the Dec/Jan Holiday edition

What Information Can I Include In My Listing?

The more information the better!
Parents prefer to find all the information they need in one location. This helps them make decisions quickly without needing to search further for answers.

It is required that all listings include the following essential information:

- Business Name
- Activity Name
- Activity Description (up to 1250 characters)
- Activity Prices, Dates and Times
- Relevant Age Range
- Business Website, Email & Contact Number
- Business Address
- Up to 4 landscape images to accompany your listing.

What Happens To My Listing After Each Advertising Period Ends?

3 weeks after each school holiday period ends, all listings will be de-activated on the app. If you have booked in for the following school holiday period, your listing will be automatically re-activated when the next period begins.

How Do I Re-activate My Listing?

After each school holiday period ends, we will email you to see if you would like your listing re-activated for the next holiday period. If you do, simply:

1. Confirm you would like your listing re-activated
2. Complete and return our "App Listing Update" form so we can update your listing with any changes. eg. new dates, times, prices etc

Can I Change My Information After The Listing Is Activated?


Any time you need to make an update to your listing simply contact us and we will promptly make the necessary changes for you.

How Does The FREE Advertising Period Work?

Advertising will be FREE for all participating businesses during the first 6 months (two school holiday periods). After 6 months, advertising fees will only be introduce IF at least 1,500 downloads within the region has been achieved.

If 1,500 downloads have not yet been achieved, your business will continue to receive your advertising for FREE untill the 1,500 downloads target is met. You are under no obilgation to continue advertising on the app once the free period concludes.

What Are The Fees After The FREE Period Ends?

After BOTH 6 months & 1,500 downloads have passed, the advertising rates will be as follows: $70 per edition or
​$224 full year (4 consecutive editions) NOTE:
Each edition gives your business exposure for at least 10 weeks, which is the equivalent of $7 per week or $1 per day.

How Are The 1,500 Downloads Measured?

When a new user signs up to the app for the first time, they are asked to select a location. Anyone who selects the "Newcastle Region" will be added to the download count.

Is The App Free To Download & Use?

Yes. Anyone can download the Holiday Happenings App and access the content and features for FREE. The app is available for both Android and iPhone devices.
